Our Reason for Being
The goals of the Montgomery Social Action Committee are as follows:
- Inform all members and friends of the UU Fellowship of Montgomery of the many opportunities for service and support existing within our city and county.
- Affirm the worth of all persons who reside within the wider community, through (a) actively seeking to meet needs within the Montgomery metro area; and (b) extending an open invitation to join us in making Montgomery a truly caring and supportive place to live.
- Demonstrate to the wider community the Unitarian Universalist tradition of not only speaking of helping others, but to give life to those words through acts of service
What We Do
Social Action seeks to interact with our community by identifying short term projects that allow us to support a diversity of organizations within Montgomery. In the past year, Social Action has conducted projects for such organizations as Brantwood Children’s Home, the Jubilee Center, and the Humane Society. In support of the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Social Action assists with the Guest At Your Table project, as well as the annual Justice Sunday. From time to time, Social Action works with the Program Committee to sponsor speakers from local organizations, such as Montgomery AIDS Outreach.
Membership
Membership in the Social Action Committee is open to all members and friends of our Fellowship. Monthly meetings are conducted via conference call. The meeting structure includes a short agenda relevant to current projects, as well as time for all attendees to dialogue on potential new projects and other concerns. Additional gatherings of the Social Action Committee are scheduled based on the demands of current projects. The Committee and other interested persons also communicate by utilizing the Fellowship’s email listing and a Yahoo group, UU Social Action.
